Press Release: Ascension by TYP
TYP Collection is proud to present Ascension, a new art installation, open September 19 and 20, 2025, at 6440 Wight St, Detroit, MI 48207.
Ascension invites visitors to explore the profound connection between life’s challenges and spiritual growth through a fully immersive walk-through experience. This solo art exhibition incorporates sight and sound, blurring the boundaries between traditional art presentation and multisensory installation. Inspired by TYP’s own journey of growth and personal transformation, the exhibition explores how life’s setbacks and perceived failures often become the foundation for resilience, renewal, and the pursuit of a higher purpose.
“Things in my life have seemed to always come full circle,” says TYP.
“There were moments in my life that felt like failure, like I was falling apart.
But every single one of those moments allowed me to grow and rise to a place I could’ve never imagined.
I believe God puts challenges in our lives so we can persevere, humble ourselves, and give us the strength and resilience that we’d be unable to gain otherwise.”
TYP, a self-taught artist based in metro Detroit, is known for blending painting with fabrication incorporating three-dimensional elements. His work includes a range of different mediums including concrete, casted objects, stained hardwoods and stained glass. Most of his work incorporates large-scale sculptural “canvases” with realistic portrait paintings. His art truly reflects his obsession with learning, progressing, and pushing creative boundaries.
“In early sobriety, art became my lifeline,” says TYP.
“Ascension illustrates the transformative power of adversity and how finding the Light can carry you through darkness.”
At Ascension, visitors will move through a series of interconnected environments designed to evoke the stages of personal evolution and spiritual growth. These works are paired with a resonant soundscape composed in collaboration with a Detroit-based producer:
Guests begin in a corridor with a title piece named Ascension, introducing a theme of reflection.
As you journey through this first series of paintings, prepare to delve into the profound themes of personal struggles, mental health challenges, and the realities of drug and alcohol abuse. Themes of erosion, melting, and reflection are interwoven throughout, symbolizing the concept of falling down. These visual metaphors for “failures” underscore the growth and resilience that emerge from life’s challenges.
Each piece serves as a poignant narrative, inviting you to witness the raw, unfiltered emotions that accompany these battles. Through vivid imagery and compelling symbolism, these artworks reveal the complexities of the human experience, encouraging reflection and empathy. Embrace the opportunity to connect with the stories behind each brushstroke, as they shed light on the vulnerability inherent in the journey toward healing and recovery.
In the second chapter of the show the paintings on concrete, interspersed with sections of stained glass, create a vivid tapestry that narrates a journey from the depths of addiction to the heights of spiritual awakening. The paintings on the concrete symbolizes the early days of sobriety, while the stained glass sections represent moments of clarity and hope illuminating the path toward redemption. This artistic fusion tells a powerful story of transformation, where spirituality becomes the guiding light, leading to profound personal change and a renewed way of living. Through this visual narrative, the artwork becomes a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the healing power of faith showcasing the artist’s journey from darkness to light, and inspiring others to welcome change and healing.
The exhibition will conclude with a powerful message inspired by the phrase,
“Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up,”
encapsulating the overarching exhibition theme.
The final piece of the show entitled "Genesis” is highlighted by a 10ft painting where living plants help to create the muse’s silhouette, creating a harmonious blend of art and nature. The environment surrounding the piece is lush, adorned with an array of plants and moss that seems to breathe life into the space. Genesis conveys a narrative of renewal, symbolizing the stripping away of the old to allow for the flourishing of the new. It reflects a message of humility and ascendance, evoking the divine touch of God's hand in crafting a new life. The piece stands as a testament to rebirth and the perpetual cycle of growth, inviting viewers to witness the beauty of transformation.
Through this narrative progression, Ascension asks visitors to engage not only visually but emotionally, fostering a dialogue about struggle, surrender, and spiritual growth.
“Everything in this show is meant to be experienced in layers,” TYP explains.
“The textures, the sound, the way light hits each surface, it all mirrors how change happens over time.”
Ascension will be open to the public on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Big Pink (6440 Wight St, Detroit, MI 48207). Admission is free, with limited-capacity timed entries to maintain the immersive nature of the show.
